You need to get out of your business to grow it

Sounds confusing? Let me explain how a customer of mine manages her business and you'll get the point.

Each day deliveries come in the door, phones are ringing with vendors calling to sell something, the cell phone is ringing with a supplier whose bill was not paid, the front door is slamming with window shoppers who keep coming and going, and to top it off, one of the employees has to leave early because their boyfriend got into trouble.

So, when do you manage your business? That's a rhetorical question because we all know that running a business is a constant battle to manage all of the moving parts, all day long, everyday, all year.

Managing your business means that you strategically design, plan, execute towards your objectives and goals. Well, that begs another question...do you have an objective or goal, for today, for the week, month and year? Most people don't have them in place because they simply don't have the time to think about them and document them. That's step one, step two is managing towards that goal or objective.

To be able to manage and think stratically, you must get OUT of your business. That means you need to step away, be out of the mix, bring your head above the weeds, be able to look down from the clouds. To do any of these things, you need to get out, you need to think, you need to plan and document. Walk away at 2 PM, go to the library, hit a Starbucks, walk through the park with a pad and pen. Let yourself think and record what you think. Ask yourself the questions and record your answers.

Then go back to the business and make some decisions based upon what your thought and documented, make some changes, set some objectives and track the results.

So, you need to get out of your business to grow it!
