Many SMALL BUSINESSES have put time and effort into designing and copyrighting a slick logo like this one from my Customer Shag:

Their logo portrays their Brand image to the customer and sets the tone for further communications to build up recognition. But the logo itself is not the totality of a Brand, it is but one element.
The business' Brand is the alignment of the business with the customer.
The Brand will define why the business exists, it's purpose.
- such as, "our business is focused on providing provocative, edgy clothing for women"
The Brand will define what the business stands for, it's positioning in the market.
- such as, "We provide our customers with a look and style that suits their personality and provide them with a concierge approach to creating their clothing image"
The Brand will build an emotional connection between the customers and the business.
- such as, "Our customer continue to visit us to chat, to find the perfect item for a special event and to help us open the Fedex boxes when new merchandise arrives!"
The Brand needs to be communicated at every level, across all interactions and help manage the perceptions that customers and prospects have of the business.
Your brand should be used consistently across your email newsletters, on Facebook, on Instagram and certainly on your snail mail.
Here is a Youtube video that is over 5 years old BUT is still relevant from a SMALL BUSINESS concept and learning perspective.
